SILHOUETTES THAT JUXTAPOSE THE ANCIENT AND MODERN

Brooklyn designer Samantha Pleet debuted her eponymous eco-friendly clothing line in 2006 and soon shot into fame for the finer integration of vital aspects of art forms with a modern spin, all through her collections.

Every Samantha Pleet collection begins with a historical research and she incorporates those elements into her designs brilliantly. Pleet intertwines the mysterious and fantastical in a framework of modernity and juxtaposes ancient ideas from art, music, history and literature with feelings before transforming them into silhouettes.

Samantha Pleet’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, The Sands of Time, draws inspiration from the ancient societies of the Fertile Crescent and the 19th century explorers who rediscovered them. Pleet transforms ancient silhouettes into modern shapes with an airy, comfortable feel, using primarily cotton and silk, in her pieces. The color palette may be subtle yet they are bright and soothing. The fabric designs are a blend of the imagery of ancient artifacts and contemporary art and are original and printed in-house in New York City.

The collection is made locally in New York City, using organic fabrics wherever possible. The retail prices start at $84 and go up for tops, $103 for skirts and $134 and up for dresses.

Musicians associated with Samantha Pleet include members of Beach House, The Dirty Projectors and Au Revoir Simone.  The Samantha Pleet collections are sold worldwide both in retail stores and online. The major retailers include Anthropologie and Saks Fifth Avenue. The complete list of retailers may be found at http://www.samanthapleet.com/.
